Enjoy the flavors of eggnog and hot chocolate together in this dairy-free and egg-free Vegan Eggnog Hot Chocolate!
When it comes to choosing a favorite holiday flavor I really can’t pick just one, however I will admit that eggnog has a special place in my heart. Growing up my Christmas mornings were filled with family coming over for Christmas brunch, which of course included a nice carton of ice cold eggnog. From what I can remember though, it was only mom and I who would drink the stuff. Or maybe we would drink it all before anyone else could have any? I’m not really sure – all I know for sure is that by the end of Christmas brunch mom and I would have polished off an entire gallon of eggnog between us.
That’s a lot of Nog, friends.
And while I can still go ham on a carton of eggnog, for the most part I have switched over to dairy-free versions to avoid putting that much dairy into my body at once. I mean if I could promise myself that I would only have one glass of regular eggnog I would – the problem is that I can never stop at one glass.
Something else that I can’t seem to get enough of right now? Hot chocolate.
You guys can totally see where this is going, right? 😉
Though if I’m being perfectly honest here, the verdict is still out on whether my love for hot chocolate is actually because of the drink itself or the mini marshmallows / whipped cream that gets added to the top. I kid you not, I inhaled roughly 2 cups worth of mini marshmallows last night when I was making this eggnog hot chocolate. Oops?
Mini marshmallow obsession aside, I pretty much now have a craving for this hot chocolate all day long. Granted the 35 degree weather has a way of making me crave all the hot drinks, but I also just can’t get enough of the subtle spices and rich chocolate flavor.
And have I mentioned yet that this eggnog hot chocolate is actually dairy-free and egg-free?
Cause it is!
I was worried at first that my vegan ‘nog wouldn’t be as thick or creamy as normal eggnog but thanks to coconut milk that is a non-issue. This vegan version is just as thick, rich and creamy as anything made with eggs!
Though I’m using a homemade, vegan eggnog for this eggnog hot chocolate, you could totally use store-bought if you prefer [whether it be a vegan version or a normal one]. Before the creation of this recipe [when the recipe was just a solid idea in my head] I actually considered just using store-bought – until I remembered that I’m a food blogger and recipe creator and I should probably try my hand at making my own ‘nog at home.
Like I said above my initial hesitance was whether or not I could capture that beloved creaminess factor, but I’m pretty confident that I pulled it off! This recipe calls for half coconut milk and half almond milk because for some reason my tummy doesn’t do well with too much coconut milk, however you could easily use all coconut milk for an even thicker and richer eggnog hot chocolate!
So friends, give that boring mug of hot chocolate a kick in the pants by making it with a simple vegan eggnog. Just try not to eat half the bag of mini marshmallows while you are waiting for it to heat…
- ½ cup lite coconut milk, canned
- ½ cup almond milk, unsweetened
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon allspice
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1½ tablespoons cocoa powder
- dairy-free whipped cream [optional]
- cinnamon, for sprinkling on top [optional]
- In a small saucepan, combine all ingredients over medium heat. Bring to a low simmer.
- Pour into a mug, top with whipped cream or marshmallows and enjoy!
Are you an eggnog fan?
