This Vegan Caramel Apple Crisp is gluten-free, refined sugar free and vegan! Made with a simple homemade caramel sauce and topped with dairy-free ice cream, this crisp is the perfect fall dessert.
This year for Thanksgiving I have been nominated as the one to bring the desserts.
I may or may not be having nightmares about it.
You see, while turkey and stuffing are of course a vital part to my family’s Thanksgiving day spread, I would say that desserts play just as important of a role. I have a sweet tooth for a reason, people – Daddy and Little Sissy would probably chase me from the house if I walked in with anything other than what they deem an “acceptable” Thanksgiving dessert, which means I can’t get too creative or crazy with it. My family likes tradition and we pretty much stick to it – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right?
Mom #2 volunteered me for Dessert duty for a few reasons. The main reason is to of course take some of the load off of her shoulders [seriously that woman goes all out for the holidays – it’s amazing!] but she also wanted me to be able to make a few gluten-free options so that I could enjoy dessert along with the family. The meal itself isn’t really a challenge for me – I typically just eat turkey and vegetable side dishes [ I don’t like stuffing! ] so the issue has always been dessert. I’m happy to not only take some of the load off of her shoulders this year but also make myself something tasty that I can enjoy with everyone else on Thanksgiving day!
But I won’t lie, my family has high standards when it comes to desserts and I’m freaking nervous.
Thanksgiving may be the holiday all about grace and being thankful for what you have but I can guarantee you that if my little ginger sister does not get the desserts she wants there is going to be some hell to pay. I’m breaking out in a cold sweat just thinking about it.
Thankfully I’m fairly sure I’ve got a dessert that’ll pass the test – this Caramel Apple Crisp!
Apple crisps are one of those “traditions” that I mentioned above that we typically always have on Thanksgiving day and seeing as how I’m personally a big fan, I figured it would be a pretty good place to start for my desserts contribution. Not only is this caramel apple crisp gluten-free thanks to rolled oats and oat flour but it is also made without any refined sugars or dairy. I’m thinking I should probably leave that part out when I tell my family about it though 😉
As with any Crisp, my favorite part is definitely the crumbly topping. It’s even better with vanilla ice cream and warm caramel drizzled on top!
To keep this Caramel Apple Crisp vegan I used this homemade caramel sauce, however any store-bought caramel can be used if you don’t need a dairy-free option.
So I’ve got one Thanksgiving dessert down. In case you were wondering, we typically have anywhere from four to five different dessert options on Thanksgiving day. Can you see now why I’m having a mini panic attack? 😉
