This hot chocolate is far from your average cup of cocoa. Made without any dairy, this thick & creamy vegan hot chocolate contains a secret ingredient that gives it that silky texture!
After the day that I had yesterday I could use about 9 cups worth of this vegan hot chocolate.
It started off ok. My class went great, I had a decent workout and I had a recipe waiting for me at home that I couldn’t wait to photoshoot. But then I walked to my car in the gym parking lot to find the driver side window shattered.
Does anyone else get utterly amazed by how things tend to pile on just before the holidays? It’s almost like life knows that you are going to be spending a ton of money on gifts so it throws unexpected bills and issues your way as well. Like, “Here! Merry Christmas! Love, Life”
Anyway, thankfully the creep wasn’t able to actually get inside my car [the window shattered but didn’t actually break] so I’m thankful to still have my beautiful Black Widow. Silver lining, right? Sigh…But let’s get to the star of the show today.
When the temperature starts to dip I do two things:
1 Buy all the fuzzy socks
2 Drink all the hot chocolate
I’m not even going to admit to the amount of hot chocolate I’ve consumed this past month. Let’s just say that it’s a large number – a very large number.
It’s getting a tad bit out of hand if I’m being honest. Not only am I finding myself purchasing two cartons of almond milk a week now but I’m also purchasing mini marshmallows nearly every week. Granted, one of those two things gets consumed by the palmful at random times of the day but still – this hot chocolate obsession of mine is doing bad things to my wallet.
Also, do we call it hot chocolate or hot cocoa? Is there a difference? An etiquette?
Whatever, I really don’t care – I just want to drink it all.
So much so that I’ve burnt my tongue more times than I can count. Seriously – I’m like an impatient child.
This isn’t your average hot chocolate though, which may excuse my inability to be patient.
You see, I’ve consumed a lot of hot cocoa in my life. I’ve done the pre-made mixes, the keurig k-cups and of course, the Starbucks versions. And while some of those have been pretty decent [there’s some amazing k-cups out there guys!] I’ve gotta say that nothing made my eyes roll back into my head quite like this homemade vegan hot chocolate.
So, what’s the secret ingredient?
Is your mind blown? Cause it should be. If it isn’t, well just lie to me and say that it is so that I feel better about myself. Thanks 😉
I played around with this recipe for a while guys, which means there was a lot of hot chocolate consumption. Well, more so than usual I mean. And while sweet potato may not be on the traditional list of ingredients for your standard hot chocolate recipe, I personally think it adds extra pizazz that takes this vegan hot chocolate from average to life changing. Let’s be honest here, unless you use canned coconut milk vegan hot chocolate tends to be a bit on the thin side. I personally want my hot cocoa to literally be like drinking liquid chocolate and while almond milk hot chocolate is satisfactory, there’s nothing more comforting and delicious to me than a thick and creamy mug of hot cocoa.
So yeah – I tossed some freaking sweet potato into my hot chocolate.
And it was pretty genius.
As for the flavor, the cinnamon does a great job of pulling out the sweet potato flavor yet the cocoa powder is enough to remind you that this drink is still hot chocolate. It’s literally perfect in every way. Try it and find out for yourself 😉

Has your car ever been broken into?
Do you add marshmallows or whipped cream to your cocoa?
