This Spiced Pear Smoothie is a delicious protein packed fall-inspired drink!
With all of the recent goodies that I’ve been posting I thought it was probably time that I threw something a bit more healthy your way. Granted, I’d like to think that all of my recipes have a certain element of health to them, maybe not in the general sense of low calorie or no sugar, but still – I’ll take my homemade goodies over anything store-bought any day. Except for that triple layer chocolate ganache cheesecake thing at Costco. 100% not gluten-free but good lord I have dreams about it….
Did you guys know that December is National Pear Month? It’s also National Eggnog Month, which I think fits the month of December much better but for the sake of this Spice Pear Smoothie we are going to focus on it being National Pear Month. Don’t fret – the eggnog appreciation is coming 😉
I’m not going to lie to you guys, I think I almost gave myself hypothermia trying to put this smoothie together. Sure, slight exaggeration on my part but when the temperature inside my house is only 51 degrees it probably isn’t the best idea to be creating smoothie recipes. Just saying.
Or maybe I just need to get better at the drinking of them process. Put on some mittens. Huddle inside a blanket. Have a hot cup of tea on the table to sip between smoothie gulps.
I legitimately had goosebumps from this spiced pear smoothie – and not the good kind. I mean, it’s delicious and all, so perfectly representative of fall and what not, but goodness gracious did it make me turn to ice from the inside out.
Which you think would’ve taught me a lesson – Kat, don’t make a smoothie until you’ve turned the heater on and the temperature in the house reaches above 65 degrees but nope! This ginger apparently has quite the learning curve.
At some point in this post I might actually start telling you more about the ingredients and flavors in this smoothie, but for now I’m apparently having a really great time telling you all about my insanity. Sheesh – feel free to skip down to the recipe if this is beginning to give you a headache. I won’t blame you.
Lately I’ve really ramped up my workouts at the gym which has me nearly starved by the time that I get home. It’s not that I couldn’t make myself a proper breakfast, I easily could, but for some reason my body seems to be on autopilot and I find myself pulling my Vita from the cupboards before I even realize what I’m doing. So I guess I’ve decided not to fight it – regardless of the temperatures within my house.
Anyway, this Spiced Pear Smoothie has become a staple as a post-workout recovery meal. Not only does it contain protein from Greek yogurt but it also contains collagen for my joints and rolled oats for carbohydrate replenishment. And then of course there’s the pear, subtly sweet, and the spices that perfectly interact with it. It all becomes blended to smoothie perfection, yielding a filling and satisfying post workout drink that doubles as a meal in a pinch.
And while I do realize that apples are the darling of the Fall fruits, I can’t deny the perfection of flavors in this smoothie. Pears have never been my ultimate favorite, in fact I would normally choose an apple, however there’s something so satisfying about a juicy, in season pear. No seriously – don’t buy pears when they aren’t in season. Totally not the same and not worth the money. But in season? Snatch those suckers up, slice them up and toss them into your oatmeal, salads and better yet, your smoothies 😉
