The favorite snack combination comes together in this Peanut Butter Apple Smoothie! Full of protein to keep you fuller longer, this smoothie is gluten-free, grain-free and dairy-free.
The first recipe of 2018 is a smoothie? Wow – I’m soo boring.
Does it at least help that there’s peanut butter involved? I’d like to think that’s my get-out-of-jail card there, though not if Little Sissy has anything to do with it. Did you know that Little Sissy actually doesn’t even like peanut butter?
Seriously – I have a best friend who doesn’t like chocolate and a little sister who doesn’t like peanut butter. What did I do to deserve this torture? 😉
Thankfully Ninja loves both chocolate and peanut butter, which is basically the reason I married him. Ok so that’s a lie, it was for his good looks and money, but we all have those things that make us weak in the knees, right?
All jokes aside, the prime reason for this Peanut Butter Apple Smoothie actually did have something to do with Ninja. You see, he’s decided to turn over a new leaf this year and give up his Dr. Pepper drinking ways, so he let me draw up a rough eating plan for him to start incorporating more real, whole foods into his diet and less PopTarts and Oreos. And no, I’m really not joking on this one, friends – Ninja is 100% addicted to sugar and though I believe that moderation in a diet is the only successful way to maintain a healthy lifestyle, Ninja’s Dr. Pepper habit had to go.
So, why the smoothie exactly?
Basically I’m trying to find yummy, wholesome foods to give Ninja so he won’t miss his Dr. Pepper, cookies and donuts too much. And I say too much because obviously he’s going to miss them – no amount of yummy clean food is going to be able to curb the detox needed to get all that junk out of his system, but I also love my husband and don’t want him to be miserable. And even though nothing is 100% off limits except soda, Ninja is being really great about wanting to be free of all the junk food. It kind of makes my heart go pitter patter if I’m being honest 😉
That peanut butter swirl also does strange things to my heart. Like, woahhh.
It’s a dang miracle I didn’t lick that spoon clean post-photo.
Though we don’t have anything written down for Ninja in regards to his new eating plan, I did set him up with healthy breakfast options, good choices for his lunches and I even went ahead and made a batch of his favorite Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Crispy Bars for a sweet fix when the craving hits [which was 4 times the other night – luckily I made the pieces smaller than normal!].
I’m hoping that smoothies like this Peanut Butter Apple Smoothie will be good for the weekends when we have more time together. In fact, this smoothie might even make an appearance this Saturday after we get home from the gym! It’s basic enough that it won’t freak him out [I’m not sure how he’d respond if I handed him that Mango Basil Smoothie I love so much] but it’s also packed with protein and essential nutrients that his body needs. Plus there’s the apple and peanut butter thing – I mean who doesn’t like that combination?! Except apparently Little Sissy who doesn’t eat peanut butter. What a freak.
I used a hemp seed protein powder for this recipe but I’ll most likely use a whey one for Ninja, so feel free to do the same if you want to play with the protein! This smoothie is going to be pretty thick so add more almond milk to thin it to your desired preference. I like my smoothies to be edible instead of drinkable 😉
- ¾ cup almond milk
- 1 apple, cored and peeled
- 1 banana, frozen
- 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder of choice [I used hemp protein]
- 1 scoop Vital Proteins collagen
- Place all ingredients into a high speed blender.
- Blend on high until smooth.
