This Peach Pie Smoothie is the perfect way to use up those summer peaches. Made without any dairy, this smoothie is gluten-free and vegan.
When it comes to peaches, there truly isn’t any competition between white peaches or yellow.
At least, not for me.
You see, when I was younger Daddy had a large peach tree growing in the backyard. It was always loaded with fresh peaches, so during the summer months I often found myself eating 2-3 a day. They were so delicious – round, plump and beyond juicy. Oh and they were white free stone peaches – aka the best kind of peach out there.
Unfortunetly that beautiful tree had to come down eventually, but I still have extremely fond memories of summers spent eating my weight in white peaches. Daddy even used to make us peach smoothies during the day – and then peach milkshakes at night.
We ate a lot of peaches, folks. You might say that because of it I’m a bit of a peach snob now.
It’s actually because of these memories that I don’t often find myself purchasing peaches anymore, especially from a grocery store chain. Since I know the true nature of a white peach [meaning how utterly perfect it is], it’s hard for me to pay for a product that I know will never live up to the memory. That being said, I found myself really craving peaches last week, so I bit the bullet and purchased a few from a local farmer’s market.
Best decision of the summer.
Upon eating both white peaches I purchased in one afternoon, I went back for more.
The 2nd batch was just as delicious and I can finally say with glee that peaches are back in my life. Hallelujah. Though shoveling the 2nd batch into my mouth as quickly as I did the first sounded like a delicious idea, I wanted to take advantage of these perfect peaches and put them in a recipe.
My first thought was of course some sort of peach pie or peach cobbler but I’m still not ready to tackle the memory of my grandmother’s peach cobbler, so I decided to leave that alone for now.
Instead, I went with a peach pie smoothie – sort of an homage to both my grandmother and Daddy in one recipe!
And it turned out freaking amazing.
This Peach Pie Smoothie truly does taste like peach pie in liquid form – so much so that I almost felt like I should classify this smoothie as a dessert. Then again, it was most likely due to the incredibly juicy nature of the white peaches. Trust me friends – go for white peaches over yellow for this smoothie!
While the flavor of this smoothie is incredible, I’ve gotta admit that my favorite thing about it was the emotions it brought forward upon the first sip. It was like an instant flashback to my childhood – laying in the hammock in Daddy’s backyard with a fresh peach in my hand and juice all over my cheeks, watching Daddy closely as he poured out our peach milkshakes so that he didn’t give himself more than me and of course, sitting around my grandmother’s table with all of my cousins enjoying a piece of homemade peach cobbler.
I know that food is nourishment for our bodies but sometimes it can also be so much more. This Peach Pie Smoothie may be a delicious and healthy snack but it’s also a window to my childhood – filled with happy memories that I will forever treasure. And that to me is worth far more than any nutritional facts.
