Snack on something zesty and sweet with these Orange Chocolate Chip Energy Bites! Naturally gluten-free, vegan and paleo, these bites are a wholesome snack!
Ya’ll I’ve been bitten by the citrus bug again.
Do you guys remember my obsession with Cuties and lime-flavored everything last year? Though I’m still obsessed with this Sea Salt Lime Popcorn, my cravings have turned more orange this year which means that yes, I am still eating an abundance of Cuties. I’m not only eating Cuties though – not with Daddy’s orange tree in full bloom!
Daddy has more oranges than he knows what to do with right now, so I’ve been helping by taking some off his hands 😉
Alright, let’s talk about these Orange Chocolate Chip Energy Bites.
Lately I have been struggling with snacks. Not so much struggling at eating them as I am struggling at choosing wholesome combinations that will not only sustain my energy levels but also curb any cravings that may be creeping in. In the warmer months my go-to snacks are typically smoothies or smoothie bowls, which I still do when the craving really hits, however with the weather being so cold right now smoothies make performing any sort of work task near impossible due to the fact that all I want to do after drinking one is cuddle into my warm bed sheets for a while to warm back up. Sad but true, ya’ll.
So instead of smoothies I’ve been looking for something a little different.
And I think I’ve found the answer.
Not only are these orange chocolate chip energy bites bright and bursting with citrus flavor but they are also subtly sweet thanks to the addition of dairy-free chocolate chips.
Can we just pause to talk a second about mini chocolate chips? While I love normal sized chocolate chips, and I really do love them, there is just something so dang adorable, appealing and delicious about mini chocolate chips. Does this make me weird? I’m really not sure, but if asked to choose between adding mini chocolate chips or regular sized chocolate chips to a recipe, I will hands down always go with mini.
Unless I’m making cookies for Ninja. He already chastised me for “limiting” his chocolate chip consumption when I made him chocolate chip cookies with mini chips. He was not very happy with that. Live and learn, right? 😉
Obligatory bite shot!
Let’s talk ingredients. These orange chocolate chip energy bites contain just a few simple, all-natural ingredients. They are:
- coconut oil
- orange juice
- orange zest
- dairy-free mini chocolate chips
- sea salt
Easy, peasy orange squeesy! See what I did there? 😉
What I’ve learned lately about myself is that when it comes to snacks, I prefer the quick and ready kind. Maybe that’s because I’m already near starvation by the time I get to my fridge? 😉
But really I just love any excuse that allows me to experiment more with different flavors, which is probably why Bite recipes are my go-to snacks. I already have a few Bite recipes on the blog that I really love, however one of my favorite things to do each season is try to find a new flavor combination that I absolutely adore using seasonal flavors. Case in point – orange!
Do I have any other chocolate orange fans out there? I truly think it’s such an underrated combination! And because orange is my newest obession I have a few more delicious recipes waiting in the wind that utilize the zesty fruit – I can’t wait to share them with you!
- 1 cup pitted dates
- 3/4 cup almonds
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons orange juice, fresh
- 2 teaspoons orange zest
- pinch sea salt
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips, dairy-free
- Place everything but the chocolate chips into a food processor. Process until mixture breaks down and starts to form a ball. Stir in chocolate chips. Batter will be sticky
- Roll batter into 18 to 20 bites. Set bites in the fridge to chill.
- Bites will harden and flavors will meld as they chill.
- If batter is too sticky to roll into balls, simply chill the dough for 10 minutes to allow it to slightly harden.
