Guys, my basil plant is out of control.
Which is really not a big deal considering how much I adore basil, however I feel like with how big and beautiful it is that I should be putting it to better use than just as a garnish or seasoning. Enter in this Mango Basil Smoothie! 🙂

Side note – does anyone else sniff herbs? And I don’t just mean a sample whiff to make sure its fresh – I’m talking full on shoving it into your face and taking a big ol’ breath in. Just me? Ok….glad we’ve established how weird I am.
So upon realizing that my entire garden was being overrun by Mr. Basil here, I started throwing it into anything and everything that I could. I put a few leaves into a smoothie on a whim, partially thinking the combo of sweet and savory would be offputting, only to find the end result to be perfection. Like, beyond perfection. And thus began my obesssion with basil in my smoothies.
Well there’s also the little detail of the weather. With the temperatures hitting above 100 degrees nearly every day for the past two weeks, this Mango Basil Smoothie has been hitting the spot when it comes to a refreshing meal. I’ve been sipping on a lot of smoothies the past few days [smoothie bowls included!] and this smoothie has been at the forefront of them all!
So how did the mango and basil combination come to be? Well, I was picking up some more produce the other week when a sign caught my eye – ” 2 mangos for $1″ Talk about a steal! I grabbed myself a few and immediately knew what I was going to do with them. It was like destiny, friends – grocery destiny.
And now I’ve gone off the rails again, I apologize. Stay with me here, ok? We’ll get to the recipe eventually.
I’ve always been a huge fan of mangos, however I’ve always felt cheated by them. For some reason [no matter how many youtube videos I watch] I can never seem to cut them right and end up leaving half of the meat attached to the seed. This then ends with me sticking the entire seed into my mouth as I try to chew and suck off what I’ve left behind. Yep! Aren’t you glad you have that visual in your head now? 😉
No but in all seriousness I truly do love mangos and seeing as how I have yet to use them in a recipe on the blog, I figured this Mango Basil Smoothie would be the perfect introduction!
It’s creamy, dreamy and ohhhh so delicious. If you are worried about the basil being too pungent, don’t be. It has just enough of a kick to be a clear basil flavor but it isn’t overly dominant – and the mango adds just the right amount of sweetness. I’m actually going to go out on a limb here and say that this is my favorite smoothie that I’ve ever created, though that Peach Pie Smoothie comes close!
So, ready to add some herbs to your smoothie? Grab yourself some basil and mangos and whip up this Mango Basil Smoothie today!
- 1 cup almond milk, unsweetened
- ½ frozen banana
- ½ fresh mango, sliced
- ¼ cup fresh basil
- splash vanilla extract
- ice, as needed
- Add all ingredients to a high speed blender.
- Blend on high until smooth.
