Once you see how easy it is to make homemade caramel, I guarantee you will never buy it from a store again. This recipe is so simple, so quick, and so delicious, that there really is no need to look any further when it comes to making your own caramel. There’s no thermometer needed plus no need to stand over the stove all day. It’s 2 simple steps, that’s it!
Homemade Caramel
Simple, quick, and no fuss, this caramel recipe is perfect for caramel apples, fancy coffee drinks, or even an ice cream topper!
Ingredients:
- 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
- water
- foil
Line a crock pot with foil. This will prevent a rust ring from forming around the top of it. Remove the paper from the condensed milk can, and place in the bottom of the crock pot. Fill with enough water to completely cover the can about 1 inch. Turn to LOW and cook for 7 hours. Remove from water and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours or over night. Open and enjoy!
That can seriously turns into that caramel? Yes it does!!
Sticky, creamy, delicious caramel
I have no words for how amazing this caramel is. I have all sorts of dreams of caramel milkshakes, caramel topped ice cream and most importantly homemade caramel frapps.

Which do you prefer, caramel or chocolate? I’d rather have a chocolate bar than a caramel square, but when it comes to an ice cream topper, I think caramel takes it!

I am amazed by this recipe..I HAD NO IDEA that was how easy it was to make caramel!?!?! WOW!
Wow, how easy! I’m totally doing this over the weekend! Thanks!
Wait… what?
My mind is boggled. I had no idea that a can of condensed milk could turn into a can of delicious caramel. I don’t have a crock pot, but I’m tempted to buy a can of milk and take a trip to Mom & Dad’s to test this out. And can I cheat and say caramel filled chocolate?
If not then I’m kind of with you. Chocolate on it’s own, but caramel as a topper.
wow I have never made caramel before. I adore that spread you have there of all the decorations, total yum
I want to eat that entire bowl of caramel. Ooo, with pretzels dipped in it?? And I’m with you–nothing beats a good piece of dark chocolate, but if I want sweet WITH something? Caramel. On popcorn! Now I want caramel corn…
I never knew a can of condensed milk turned into caramel? How in the world did you find this out??
I’d much rather have a chocolate bar.
Yum! I can’t get over how genius the apple dipping station is!!
You are a genius! Who knew you could make caramel from a can of condensed milk! I’m totally going to have to try this! Now I want caramel apples too! Happy Halloween!
Yummmmmyy!! Wow, these pictures are absolutely amazing. I’ve never made homemade caramel. But you make it look so easy!
ommmgshhh I don’t even think that’s caramel! That’s actually more like my belooooooved dulce de leche! The argentinean spread we use to put in desserts, spread on toast/crackers, and soo much more…so genius.
ps: for the record, I think dulce de leche is way better than caramel.
