If you guys follow me on Instagram, then you may or may not have noticed that I was stuck at 2 pull-ups for like, ever and a day. It seemed that no matter how many times I practiced them, I could not for the life of me get passed 2. I would get 2 1/2, but never 3. Seeing as how I don’t belong to a gym and don’t have access to machines and such, I blamed my pull-up progress on my lack of back muscles. Sure, I can do rows at home with my dumbbells, but I felt like I wasn’t getting any where. I would do 5 sets of 1 arm rows at 30lbs, but still, no progress on the pull-up bar.
I was getting pretty frustrated with myself for not being able to get 3 pull-ups, so I made a plan. I was going to try to do 3 pull-ups every day until I could. Instead of only doing them a few times a week, I tried every day. Some days were better than others I must say, depending on how sore I was from the previous day’s workout, but I still always managed to do 2 somehow.
Then one day during a workout, I was just feeling it. I pumped out 3 sets of 20 push-ups without any problems. Weird, I’m usually struggling by that last rep I thought. So I jogged over to my pull-up bar, feeling this overwhelming sense of strength. I gripped the bar and pulled myself up, one, two, three times. THREE TIMES. I had done 3 freaking pull-ups, without even thinking about it.
That’s right peeps, your truly can now do 3 pull-ups, every single time I try. The 3 I did that day weren’t a fluke (which I was kind of worried about!). I can do 3 neutral grip pull-ups and almost 3 chin ups. Instead of every day now I aim to do them 3 days a week, for 5 sets of 3 (or more if I can!), which means I do 15 unassisted pull-ups each time. Not bad huh?!
So here’s what I can do:
- 20 push-ups in a row on toes
- 3 unassisted pull-ups
Here’s what I’m working towards:
- 30 push-ups on toes
- 5 unassisted pull-ups
I don’t have much of a plan set up, I’m just going to keep at it until I achieve my new goals. After all, persistence equals success right?
