Finds of the Week

Man oh man do you guys love some foam!! I was amazed by how many of you guys want a frother. Maybe a giveaway? If enough of you want it, I will gladly deliver. Just let me know!

Finds of the Week
You guys know already how much I love shopping, but last night’s episode of The Biggest Loser (anyone else a fan?) really kind of pushed my buttons. They did this challenge where they had to buy groceries for themselves for the week, with only $10 a day. Of course they all freaked and were shocked when they made their budget and were able to buy the healthy food they wanted.

Can I just say that the whole “eating healthy is too expensive” excuse is a little old? Don’t get me wrong, I understand that a salad is more than a burrito at a restaurant, but I’m talking about in the grocery stores. The truth is, if you know what you’re doing (and even if you don’t!!) you can easily make it out of the grocery store without spending your entire paycheck (unless you shop at Whole Foods and it sucks you in, then that’s just your fault).

Here’s a perfect example of shopping on a budget. Today I got some major deals, and sure maybe these deals won’t be there next week, but that’s why you look around!! And maybe next week it’ll be something new that you get on sale, you just have to LOOK!!

Produce Deals

IMG_3449 Zucchinis: 3 for $1, Avocados: 4 for $2, Spaghetti Squash: $1 each, Bloobs: $1 each

Total so far: $7

Dips/SpreadsIMG_3452 Guacamole $1.50 and Hummus $1

Total so far $9.50

Grains / SeedsIMG_3454Flaxseeds and Steel Cut Oats $1 each

Cascadian Farms cereal buy one get one free ($3.99 each)

Total so far $15.49

MeatIMG_34532 packages of chicken sausage 2 for $7

Total is $22.49

Now granted, I buy much more than this for Ninja and I, and some of these things were impulse buys (cereal anyone?!), but the point is that you CAN eat healthy for a decent price. And cutting out meat a few times a week will help tremendously. Beans are a super cheap way to get in your protein, and you seriously can’t go wrong with a homemade black bean enchilada.

What are your must haves each week, regardless of price?

  • those chicken sausages look great. i so love deals, i always go to the clearance section at the grocery store to get some killer finds

  • Blueberries for $1?!? That’s awesome! And I agree–beans are a fantastic, inexpensive source of protein and fiber. I buy them dried, and cook them myself. It literally costs pennies!

Oh yeah–I’m definitely voting for a frother giveaway!! :)

  • I was so frustrated with that segment last night! I manage to eat pretty “cleanly + healthy” for far less than $70 dollars a week and it drives me nuts when people claim it’s impossible. My boyfriend joked that for $70 dollars a week he’d be eating lobster and steak everyday. I think it definitely helps though if you plan your meals ahead of time instead of wandering the store trying to drum up ideas too.

  • Jen

Wow, that produce s so cheap! I am jealous, I often splurge on fresh fruit even when the price is higher.

  • you are so thrifty! i wish i could find deals like that! where do you shop!?

  • I look, but I cannot find prices like that – not even close. And it’s especially bad on produce. Maybe it’s because I live in a place that’s cold and far up North, so we have to get all of our produce imported from far away. But yeah… blueberries alone cost me around $5 :(

  • Yay I found a fellow Fresh and Easy shopper! Haha. I love all their deals, and my favorite thing there is that hummus- yum!

  • You always score the best deals! I’m so jealous!

  • Man, those are awesome deals!!!! I wish things were that cheap over here.. heck I wish we had chicken sausage here :(

  • My must-haves each week include bread, peanut butter, and bananas haha! And Brandon must have his Life cereal and milk. Other than that, I’m pretty open to finding good deals! :)

  • Dude! You made out like a bandit on the fruits and veggies! I’m seriously jealous…especially since I just paid OVER a dollar a POUND on one MAMMOTH spaghetti squash! Lol And those sausages sound amazing!

I don’t usually shop on a budget since it’s just me at the house and well, I really don’t spend money on anything but food anyways! ;) But my must haves for the week REGARDLESS of price are bananas, spinach, almond milk (though I do go back and forth on Silk or Almond Breeze…whichever is cheaper even though AB is soooo much better), and EGGS! Gotta have my eggs!

  • I completely agree with you!

But I did read this article recently about this that was really interesting. She made some really good points on the side of “eating unhealthy is cheaper” (specifically for certain areas of the country) that I really hadn’t thought of before. Like how it’s a lot easier to eat and buy healthier when you live in a town that has close and convenient access to stores like Stop & Shop and Whole Foods — whereas in low-income areas, mostly in big cities, there aren’t stores like that, there are only small corner stores and bodegas. She goes into the whole political side of why bodegas carry certain foods and why certain foods aren’t available in those kinds of areas.

Plus, you have to remember that not everybody has reliable (or any) transportation. If the bus doesn’t go to Stop & Shop, then how would you be able to buy healthy food like produce?

Just some thoughts… But I agree with you that, in this particular case, it’s ridiculous to think that these middle-class (mostly) white adults are baffled by the idea that eating healthy doesn’t have to break the bank.

Here’s the link to the article I was talking about: http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/social-construct/why-theres-no-good-food-in-the-hood-deconstructing-the-bodega-and-the-corner-store/
