Creamy, thick and loaded with healthy fats and antioxidants, this Chocolate Matcha Smoothie contains a secret ingredient – avocado!
This Chocolate Matcha Smoothie is my newest smoothie obsession.
I know that I say that nearly every smoothie recipe, but I’m serious this time guys. This smoothie? It’s the Bee’s Knees. It’s the Cat’s Pajama’s, if you will. It’s the best thing since sliced bread.
Ok sorry. I’m done.
I’m no stranger to matcha powder. I’ve used it a few times on the blog and freaking love the stuff – and not just for it’s nutrients either! I actually like the taste of matcha powder, sans sugar of course. Those matcha lattes you get from Starbucks? That’s not matcha, y’all. Sure, it’s tasty – but that’s because its loaded with sugars and aritificial chemicals. I’m not judging [I used to get one once a week!] I’m just letting you know – that ain’t the real deal peeps.
This Chocolate Matcha Smoothie? It’s the real deal.
It starts with simple, real ingredients.
Side note, if you have never added avocado to your smoothie, what in the world are you doing with your life?! Not only are you missing out on some great healthy fats but you are also depriving yourself of the creamiest, richest smoothie you’ve ever had. Trust me – put the avocado in your smoothie!
When it comes to smoothies, sometimes I get lost in all the powders, superfoods, fruit, veggies and everything else that you can throw into them. It’s for that reason that I love smoothies so much, however its also for that reason that sometimes making a smoothie isn’t always as easy or simple as it sounds.
Lately I’ve been focusing more on minimal – but still powerful – ingredients that will give me the most bang for my buck. As a lover of nutrition sometimes I get so caught up in the “shoulds and shouldn’ts” of nutrition and take the focus off the most important thing – the food! Which is why I adore this Chocolate Matcha Smoothie. It still has plenty of nutrients but has just 5 simple ingredients – what more could I possibly need?
Other than chocolate, of course. Good thing this smoothie has that too 😉
And thanks to the 1/2 an avocado used, this smoothie also has some serious staying power.
I’m not normally one to replace a meal with a smoothie for one simple reason – I’m hungry again in an hour. Which is why most of my smoothies tend to be snacks rather than meals, but this baby? Oh this baby kept me satisfied for over two hours – unheard of for me! I’m telling you guys, healthy fats have magical powers. Include more of them into your diet and see for yourself!
I personally kept my smoothie au natural [ie no added sweetener], however if you feel the need to bump up the sweetness level then by all means go right ahead. My banana was pretty dang ripe so it had all the sweetness needed, but I’ve included some maple syrup into the recipe as an option just in case!
- 1 banana, frozen
- ½ avocado
- 1 teaspoon matcha powder
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup (optional)
- cacao nibs, for topping
- Add the banana, avocado, matcha powder, cocoa powder, almond milk and maple syrup if using to a high speed blender.
- Blend on high until smooth.
- Sprinkle with cacao nibs is using and enjoy.
Have you ever added avocado to a smoothie?
