I’m going to be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of beets.
I’ve tried them numerous ways – steamed, roasted, coated in spices – and none of them are even remotely appealing to me. I just can’t get past the fact that they taste like dirt – no matter what I do to them!
That is until this smoothie. Apparently the key to me tolerating beets is to peel them, shred them, add a bunch of raw cacao powder to them and blend it all up together into a smoothie. And now that I’ve experienced beets in my smoothie I don’t think I’ll ever be able to live without them. This chocolate beet smoothie is just that good.
And as weird looking as these beets are, I actually think they are gorgeous.
It never ceases to amaze me how something that is buried under the ground can end up so vibrant and beautiful. Carrots, beets, parsnips…they all grow under ground and yet all have such beautiful color to them! Maybe there is some kind of hidden lesson there that God wants us to learn? That maybe it isn’t first impressions that matter – it’s when we truly dig deeper that we discover more about each other and maybe even ourselves. That the beauty can sometimes be hidden, but that doesn’t make it any less worthy.
Though I could just be reading wayyy too much in it. Too much heaviness and thought-provoking discussion for a Monday? 😉
One thing I know for sure? That this Chocolate Beet Smoothie is gorgeous.
Besides being a quick source of fuel, smoothies are my go-to way to pack in the nutrients. Think about it – how easy is it to increase your intake of fruits, vegetables and other superfoods when you blend them up! Though this smoothie may be basic and have just a few ingredients it also packs a punch of “superfoods” – aka the foods that are deemed to be abnormally nutritious for us. And while I prefer to get the bulk of my nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables I also don’t think there is anything wrong with getting an extra boost from said “superfoods” every now and again.
In this case, its hemp hearts and chia seeds!

But this time instead of keeping them separate I decided to combine the two, because what’s better than one superfood? Two superfoods! 😉
So if you have been wary of beets for a while now, I encourage you to give this chocolate beet smoothie a try. It is amazing – and it doesn’t taste like dirt!
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 banana, frozen
- 1/2 fresh beet, peeled and shredded
- 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder
- 1 tablespoon hemp hearts
- 1/2 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1-2 teaspoons maple syrup
- Add all ingredients into a high speed blender.
- Blend on high until smooth.
