A protein-packed smoothie bursting with key lime pie flavor, this key lime smoothie is also loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids!
Me and my cravings guys – that’s the only explanation I have for a key lime smoothie recipe to follow a Crockpot Sweet Potato Soup recipe.
Well that and the fact that I’m craving all things citrus flavored at all times right now. It’s really getting to become a problem – especially now that my siblings are starting to notice how many of their Cuties I eat when I’m at their house. I probably shouldn’t be eating all of their healthy school snacks [Sister of the Year award winner right here!].
But let’s move back to the key lime smoothie at hand here.
This delicious concoction of mine is a result of one too many vanilla banana protein smoothies. See, I make a protein smoothie almost every day [post-workout] and the two main ingredients are always a banana and a scoop of vanilla protein powder. I know, super boring. But it works for me, it pairs well with everything, and it’s quick and easy to toss together. Why bother changing it up?
Unless of coures it’s to add some fresh lime in there. Then by all means, change away! 😉
And let me just tell you guys – this stuff is the bomb.com. So much so, that I’ve already deemed this smoothie combination my new favorite. Vanilla and banana was so last year!
I think my favorite part about this key lime smoothie [aside from the muscle building protein and delicious lime flavor] is the addition of chia seeds. You guys know how much I adore my healthy fats, and though I try not to eat too many of them directly after a workout [it’s best to refuel with carbs & protein] I really love the extra oomph of omega-3 fatty acids the chia seeds give this smoothie.
While Americans are dearly lacking in plenty of areas in terms of nutrients, omega-3 fatty acids are one of the glaring ones because of the imbalance of omega-6 fatty acids and omega-3s. Unfortunately Americans are consuming far too many omega-6 fatty acids and not enough of the counter-balancing omega-3 fatty acids, which leads to all kinds of inflammation related diseases such as heart diseases and diabetes.
And that is definietly not a life-prolonging combination.
So while sipping on this delicious key lime smoothie won’t magically balance out your omega-6s and omega-3s, it most definietly can help. It can also help fill your grumbling belly and refuel your muscles after a tough workout, all while transporting you to a tropical island [bikini sold separately].
