This Cherry Chocolate Chip Smoothie is bursting with cherry and chocolate flavor but is also hiding a secret ingredient – quinoa! Dairy-free and packed with plant-based protein.
So guys, I did a thing – and I’m going to need y’all to be really open to it.
Allow me to explain.
The weather here has been insane. INSANE. I’m talking temperatures above 110 degrees during the day and temperatures only dropping to roughly 75 at night. No joke – I’m already sweating at 4am when I walk out my front door to go teach my early morning HIIT class. In fact, we should probably not discuss the puddle that currently sits under my bare legs on this chair as I sweat. Ninja and I are trying desperately to avoid turning on our AC until we absolutely have to in order to save some money but this weather is bananas!
All that to say, my appetite has been less than stellar as a response. I’m finding myself getting snacky more often, however I also find myself taking a bite or two of something and already being full. I don’t do well in the heat, like at all, so I know that my appetite changes are due to that. I’m trying my best to keep my body fueled with nutrients, and some days are better than others, however I think I’ve found something that is really going to help – this Cherry Chocolate Chip Smoothie.
Last week I had made myself two smoothies [post-workout and breakfast] and was prepping a third [for lunch] when I decided to toss a bit of cooked quinoa into my blender along with the other ingredients. Things don’t always go the way that I plan them in the kitchen, however I am beyond pleased to say that this one went above and beyond my expectations. Because this smoothie? It’s amazing.
And before you get all up in arms about it, yes I realize that I just posted a quinoa recipe on Monday. I told you I was obsessed with it, didn’t I? 😉
Another thing that I am beyond obsessed with at the moment? The chocolate cherry combo.
Other than this Cherry Chocolate Chip Smoothie, I’ve also posted a Black Forest Pudding that may or may not be currently in development to becoming something further. I also made chocolate cherry muffins this week [at 7AM to avoid getting heat stroke and dying in my kitchen] for my snacks. Yep – chocolate and cherry everything!
And if adding quinoa into your smoothie is giving you slight pause, just remember that people add oats all the time! It’s the same principle, however quinoa is giving you a good chunk of complete protein, fiber, iron, magnesium and many other essential nutrients. I’d say it’s well worth the experimentation, wouldn’t you? 😉
And now I’m off to cook dinner, so if you don’t hear from me its because I’ve died from heat stroke trying to cook for my poor husband. I suppose I can only force feed him eggs and sanwiches for so long…
- ¾ cup almond milk
- ⅓ cup fresh cherries, pitted and chopped
- ½ banana, frozen
- ⅓ cup quinoa, cooked
- 1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips, dairy-free
- ice, as needed
- Add the almond milk, cherries, banana and quinoa to a high speed blender. Add additional ice, if desired. Blend on high until smooth.
- Add chocolate chips and pulse a few times to break up.
What is the strangest addition you’ve ever added to your smoothie?
