These 8 healthy superfood smoothies are far from your basic smoothie – each one contains a superfood ingredient that takes the flavor, taste and nutrient content over the top!
There’s been a lot of chocolate on the blog as of late and while I have no intentions of slowing down, I thought that maybe we could use a bit of a chocolate detox – if just for today 😉
Thank you all for the sweet birthday wishes to Little Sissy. We had a really great night just hanging out and enjoying Mom#2’s amazing cooking. I swear that kid can make me laugh like no one else – my favorite part is when her and I get to laughing and the rest of the family has no idea what’s happening – they just look at us like we are crazy. I love being able to have that with Sissy. It is truly something that I never thought that I’d be blessed to have and it is yet another confirmation that moving from LA to this small little town was well worth it <3
Alright, ready for some healthy superfood smoothies?
One of my favorite things about smoothies is just how much nutrition you can load into one glass. I mean let’s be real here – who the heck wants to eat vegetables and salads all the time? Not this girl! Smoothies are also a really easy way to incorporate some foods that you might not be that fond of, masking the flavor with other flavors that you enjoy. I do it quite often with chocolate, as you’ll see below!
While these 8 smoothies do contain superfood ingredients, I’m not talking about commonly advertised superfoods such as flaxseed or chia seed. We are stepping outside of the superfood box with these smoothies – and it tastes pretty fabulous 😉
8 Healthy Superfood Smoothies
Sweet potato in a smoothie? Yes, please!
Sweet potatoes are one of those superfoods that I don’t think gets enough credit thanks to its carb content. Too often we get so wrapped up in starches and carbohydrates that we forget just how jammed packed with nutrients those orange beauties are! Not only is sweet potato extremely rich in vitamin A but it is also high in vitamin C, making it great for our immune systems during cold season [aka now!].
We’ve all heard the saying,
“An apple a day keeps the doctory away.”
Now I don’t believe that is necessarily true, however apples are a great addition to our diets! Apples shine in their ability to aid in digestion thanks to their fiber content but they also contain a diverse family of phytonutrients which can help to fight certain cancers.
And who doesn’t love the apple and peanut butter combination, right? 😉
One of my favorite summer smoothies!
Last season when my basil plant grew out of control I started shoving it into anything and everything. Much to my surprise was how incredible of a flavor it had in this Basil Mango Smoothie! More than just a flavorful herb to use in cooking, basil has been proven to have several benefits including anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, cancer fighter and immune boosting!
And then there was the time I tossed quinoa into a smoothie.
Though I love the benefits of quinoa I sometimes can struggle getting it into my diet thanks to the texture of it. Well, no texture issues to worry about in a smoothie! Rich in plant-based protein, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, quinoa hides inside this smoothie behind the delicious and bold flavors of cherry and chocolate!
Thanks to the golden milk trend we should all be well aware of the benefits of turmeric by now.
In conjuction with the blackberries in this smoothie bowl, which are also rich in antioxidants, this smoothie is one heck of an anti-inflammatory fighter! And don’t worry – the turmeric isn’t too overpowering at all in this smoothie. I topped it with hemp seeds and chia seeds for protein and healthy fats.
I don’t like beets – unless they are shredded into a smoothie and paired with chocolate 😉
I’m one of those people who doesn’t believe in forcing yourself to eat something just because it’s good for you. That being said, I do believe in experimenting with your food and trying different ways to eat it, especially when it comes to vegetables!
Beets have never been a favorite of mine, however they are so full of nutrients including vitamin C, potassium, manganese and more that I’ve tried to experiment with them in several different ways. This Chocolate Beet Smoothie is by far one of my favorites!
Are you noticing a theme yet? Apparently whenever there’s an ingredient that has a questionable flavor, I throw it into a smoothie and cover it in cocoa powder. Pretty ingenius if you ask me!
While I’m personally a fan of the matcha flavor, I know that many people aren’t. That being said, it’s benefits are beyond stellar and I encourage you to incorporate it into your diet if you can. Absolutely loaded with antioxidants, matcha contains 137 times more antixidants than regular green tea!
Cauliflower is a freaking wonder food.
In fact, did you know that cauliflower contains at least a small amount of nearly every nutrient that the human body needs? Crazy, right?! It is especially rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, beta-carotene and other antioxidants. And of course with the addition of strawberries, this smoothie has even more antioxidants loaded in it!
Needless to say, these smoothies not only taste great but are loaded with good-for-you ingredients. And what’s better than health food that doesn’t taste like health food?! 😉
